Discover the Japanese martial art of Aikido, founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the early twentieth century. Rooted in the principles of harmony and non-resistance, Aikido emphasises redirecting an opponent's force rather than relying on aggressive strength, allowing practitioners to apply techniques efficiently with minimal force.

Aikido incorporates a range of techniques, including throws, joint locks, strikes, and pins, while emphasising balance, coordination, control, and fluid movement.

Classes primarily involve partner-based training through pre-arranged forms (kata), with students taking on two key roles:

Shite (Applying the Technique): Practise executing Aikido techniques through repeated partner exercises, developing the ability to redirect an opponent's force efficiently.
Uke (Receiving the Technique): Learn to receive techniques safely while developing ukemi, the art of falling and redistributing impact to reduce the risk of injury.

Through repeated partner practice, students progressively develop their understanding of Aikido techniques, improve their body awareness, and refine their ability to move in harmony with others.

Unlike competitive martial arts, Aikido training does not focus on winning or losing. Instead, it emphasises cooperation, mutual respect, and personal development, encouraging students to improve their physical techniques while cultivating mental discipline and self-awareness.

Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in, classes are held barefoot.
